Sports Illustrated recognized Daniel J. Mullen, M.D. as one of the "Outstanding Orthopedic Surgeons in America" in 2014. Highly regarded in the Phoenix medical community, Dr. Mullen is a board certified and fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine, Arthritis Management, and Joint Replacement Surgery. Recognized numerous times by his peers as a Phoenix Magazine "Top Doc", Dr. Mullen has won multiple awards for his research, his exemplary medical care, his bedside manner, and his service to his community.
Dr. Mullen has published orthopedic research in orthopedic surgery textbooks and peer reviewed medical journals on the knee, shoulder, and elbow surgeries and has presented his research on national and international stages. He currently serves as a scientific reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine, where he and his colleagues on the review committee help decide what medical research has the relevance and merit worthy of publication for doctors all over the world to read.
Dr. Mullen grew up in Pennsylvania, completed undergraduate studies at The University of Notre Dame, and went back to Pennsylvania for medical school at Temple University. He did his five years of orthopedic training in Baltimore at the Union Memorial Hospital, Johns Hopkins University Hospital, and the University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Center before accepting a fellowship position at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Mullen was a member of the Cleveland Clinic medical team that cared for a number of professional athletes. He was one of the team doctors for the NFL's Cleveland Browns, MLB's Cleveland Indians, and the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers.
In the Phoenix East Valley since 2002, Dr. Mullen has cared for countless injured competitors ranging from weekend warriors to current professional athletes. On the ice, on the court, in the locker room, in the dugout, and on the sidelines, Dr. Mullen has been a part of many different professional sports coverage units in his career but his passion has always been the medical well-being of the amateur athlete.
Dr. Mullen commits time and expertise all year long to athletes with a passion for sports and competition from schools all over Phoenix and its East Valley, and serves as the team physician for a number of local high schools. "These young men and women are committed to fitness, education, training, injury prevention, and winning. There is a competitive spirit here, and I am proud to be a part of their teams."
Dr. Mullen takes care of athletes of all ages, young and old. As an expert in reconstructive surgery, Dr. Mullen has put back together scores of people with broken bones, and has replaced the knees, hips, and shoulders of thousands upon thousands of patients in the Phoenix Metro area. He is a community leader in orthopedic surgery performing arthroscopy, arthritis management, joint replacement, and minimally invasive surgery.
Ask him what he is most proud of, and Dr. Mullen will tell you it’s his family. He is happily married to Dr. Jean Mullen, pediatrician, and is the father of three beautiful children.
